Young Explorers is the UUFSMA’s religious education program
for children and youth between the ages of 5 and 15.
Picture
The purpose of the program is to teach UU values in age appropriate language and context.
Picture
Children and young people of all faith backgrounds, or none, are welcome to join us.

Parents and other adult caregivers are welcome to observe or help in the classroom during the lessons or to attend our Sunday services in the sanctuary.
Lessons, drawn from the UUA Tapestry of Faith curricula include stories from such diverse sources as world religions, science, history, folk tales, legends and current events. While most of our classes are conducted in Spanish, all of our teachers are bilingual and English-speaking students are actively welcomed. Classes are free and any needed school supplies are provided. Older youth (11 to 15 years) are also welcome to join our youth group (UUth Explorers) for periodic social gatherings and field trips throughout the year. Each class also includes a healthy snack.
Beginning in Fall 2025, the Young Explorer program is expanding to two classes per month (every other Sunday).

Classes are held during the regular Sunday service (10:30 - 11:30 a.m.) in the Sala Allende, Hotel Posada de la Aldea, second floor, located at the back of the sanctuary.

Love Connects Us

2024-2025 Academic Year
In the classroom this spring, the Young Explorers studied the UUA curriculum “Love Connects Us,”
a stellar collection of lessons that puts love at the center of everything they learn at the UUFSMA.

As an example, here are three of their classes during the 2024-2025 academic year:
  • "One Person Can Make a Difference"
  • “The Power of Peace: Thoreau, Gandhi y King”
  • “Peace Inside: Serenity, Courage and Wisdom.”

The lesson "One Person Can Make a Difference” introduced the students to the story of Craig Keilberger, a 12-year old Canadian boy who read an article about child labor in Pakistan and made up his mind to do something about it.  He inspired six of his friends to join him in forming a group called Kids Can Free the Children. Together they made it possible for children to get an education instead of jobs. And that was just the beginning of their human rights journey.

This lesson introduced the group to the power of nonviolent resistance and activism as practiced by Henry David Thoreau, Mahatma Gandhi and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

When 10-year-old Marissa comes home and tells her mother she’s angry with her best friend who was mean to her at recess, the mother encourages her to dig a little deeper and consider why her friend might have acted the way she did. By putting herself in her friend’s shoes, Marissa learns an important lesson about compassion and kindness.

Our Young Explorers spent their first full year after the COVID shutdown learning about the Seven UU Principles and making their own mandalas depicting each Principle.

Past Activities & Events

Our Young Explorers enjoy periodic social gatherings throughout the year, including Saturday afternoons for pizza and games. Our older students (UUth Explorers) also enjoy occasional outings to such places as Charco del Ingenio and Tikkun Eco Center to learn about our endangered local environment.
